| When the tide recedes twice each day, water
is trapped in pockets along the rocky shoreline. Burnt Island has a number
of accessible tide pools on its southern and eastern shores. Many different
species of marine plants and animals can be found residing in these water-filled
depressions. You first see seaweed in the intertidal zone. Periwinkle snails,
limpets and numerous crustaceans live more densely in this zone than in
other zones. Several species of crabs, sea urchins, barnacles, mussels,
starfish and sea anemones are found along most rocky shores. Mussels, Golden
Star Tunicates, brown seaweed, snails, bivalve mollusks and hermit crabs
are also found. Animals in tidepools can be found in every available space,
on rocks, under rocks, under seaweed, on other animal shells and in cracks
and holes. |
