The glassed in room at the top of the lighthouse tower is called the lantern room. It houses the lens and light source. The square bullseye fresnel lens was replaced by a 375mm classical glass lens in 1961 when the station was electrified. Today, a 300mm plastic fresnel lens is found in the Burnt Island Lighthouse. The light source is a 250 watt bulb that is positioned in a 4 place lamp changer. When one bulb burns out, another lamp is positioned automatically. The lamp flashes once every six seconds. The glass in the lantern room is red glass with two white sectors. These white sectors indicate the fairways or safe zones to follow when entering Boothbay Harbor.
